By Composition and Properties:
Characteristics
Titanium's density (~4.5 g/cm³) is only about 60% that of steel, yet its strength approaches that of high-strength steels. Its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio makes it ideal for aerospace and other fields where reducing structural weight while maintaining strength is critical.
Titanium readily forms a dense, protective oxide film on its surface, enabling stability in harsh environments like acids, alkalis, and salt solutions – often outperforming stainless steel. This makes it suitable for chemical processing, marine engineering, and other areas demanding high corrosion resistance, reducing maintenance costs and replacement frequency.
Titanium exhibits excellent compatibility with human tissue. It is non-toxic, non-magnetic, and causes no adverse reactions, making it widely used in medical applications such as artificial joints, dental implants, and orthopedic fixation devices.
Offers a broad operating temperature range (-250°C to 600°C). Certain titanium alloys retain good properties at elevated temperatures, enabling their use in high-temperature components like aircraft engine parts.
Demonstrates excellent stability under various stresses, suitable for demanding applications like pressure vessels and mechanical parts. Titanium plates also possess good weldability, allowing them to be joined to other metals to meet complex structural design requirements.
The naturally formed oxide film on titanium plate is highly durable. Crucially, it eliminates the need for release agents (preventing electrolyte contamination) and pre-treatment processes like starter sheet preparation, broadening its application potential.
Production Processes
Raw Material Preparation: Titanium ore is extracted and purified through smelting and melting processes to obtain high-purity titanium metal.
Processing & Manufacturing: The titanium metal is forged into a slab shape. This slab is then processed via hot rolling or cold rolling to achieve a flat, smooth surface. Finally, treatments such as annealing and pickling are applied to enhance surface quality and corrosion resistance, resulting in plates of the required dimensions.
Applications
Used for aircraft structural components, aero-engine parts, and spacecraft materials. For instance, titanium alloys constitute approximately 15% of the total weight in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, significantly reducing weight, improving fuel efficiency, and extending service life.
Manufacture of artificial joints, dental implants, and orthopedic fixation devices, meeting the high demands for biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical performance in human implants.
Construction of storage tanks, reactors, heat exchangers, and evaporators. Resists corrosion from various acids, alkalis, and salts, extending equipment lifespan and enhancing production safety.
Shipbuilding, seawater desalination equipment, and offshore platform structures. Its resistance to seawater corrosion reduces maintenance costs and withstands harsh marine environments.
Engine components and body structures. Enables vehicle weight reduction while ensuring safety, improving fuel economy and acceleration performance.
Housings and heat dissipation components. Utilizes titanium's good thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties to meet demands for miniaturization and high performance.
Bicycles, golf clubs, skis, etc. Provides lightweight, robust, and durable gear, enhancing the sporting experience.
Piping, valves, pumps in nuclear power plants, and substrates for solar cells. Its excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties suit the specific environments and requirements of the energy industry.
